An Old Barn: Part 1 – Investigation

04 September 2024

1

We have been working on a listed public house for some time now, and part of the brief was to convert a dilapidated storage barn into a multi-function room as part of the pub’s facilities.

The first step was to strip the mixed-period roof tiles and faulty felt and battens in order to reveal the original timbers. We then methodically and painstakingly surveyed the timber sizes one by one, as our brief (and legal obligation due to the listed status) was to maintain and preserve as much of the existing building as possible while also ensuring structural stability for the future.

The inconsistent sizing, condition and format of these roof timbers are indicative of the age and historic interest of this building, as is the condition of the interior.

Part 2 to follow as we progress.
